This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
